Een maand van stilte

Sinds de laatste keer dat ik postte, is er veel gebeurd en veel niet gebeurd, en het was goed. Zo heb ik ondervonden hoe het is om vier dagen per week 6 uur te werken. En ook dat was goed. Voor de rest heb ik vast bijzonder veel interessante dingen gedaan, maar ze zijn weggevaagd in het geweld van het werk dat ik gedaan heb.
(Zo heb ik afgelopen weekend nog een zware nachtelijke zuidwesterstorm doorstaan aan de westkust. Daarbij was het overdag zulk mooi weer dat we weer kilometer gelopen hebben.)
En ik heb een aanknopingspunt om mijn scriptie mee aan te vangen, dat bestaat uit het duidelijk maken van het verband tussen het postmodernisme en het digitale tijdperk. Dit verband komt tot uitdrukking in het genre waar ik al een half jaar mee bezig ben: cyberpunk.

Want was het niet Frederic Jameson die zei:
Cyberpunk is, "the supreme literary expression if not of postmodernism, then of late capitalism itself"
en ook dat cyberpunk "which is fully as much an expression of transnational corporate realities as it is of global paranoia itself: William Gibson's representational innovations, indeed, mark his work as an exceptional literary realization within a predominantly visual or aural postmodern production."

In reactie hierop stelt Roger Burrows:
"Cyberpunk represents more than just poetics. For some analy sts it also provides a sociologically coherent dystopic vision of a very near future, which is about to collapse on the present. Whether writers such as William Gibson intend it or not, their 'fiction' is being systematically read as social and cultural theory."

Hij haalt ook Tim Leary aan:
Gibson 'has produced nothing less than the underlying myth, the core legend, of the next stage of human evolution. He is performing the philosophic function that Dante did for feudalism and that writers like Mann, Tolstoy [and] Melville...did for the industrial age'
